SPIRIT II Mission Initiation Conference
On November 18th and 19th, students involved with the SPIRIT II project traveled to Wallops Island in Virginia for the Mission Initiation Conference (or Preliminary Design Review) with NASA. On Sunday night, before the conference, Penn State students met with the Clemson students who wanted to become involved with the project and practiced the presentation. After the presentation, Penn State and Clemson students divided into several groups for break-out meetings with NASA engineers, a Penn-State Clemson student conference or a tour of the Wallops Flight Facility.

Several weeks preceding the conference, Penn State students worked hard to finialize many design parameters, write the Mission Initiation Conference Document that would be presented to NASA, and compile it in an orgnaized manner. Document sections were written by the individual group members who had worked on their design. Each team leader compiled their group's section and Dawn Noga, compiled the whole document.
The breakout meetings after the presentation gave students the opportunity to present designs to experienced NASA engineers on a one-to-one level. The breakout meetings included a Power and Wiring meeting, a GPS reciever group, a Telemetry meeting, a Rocket Dynamics and Stability meeting and an Inflatable Sphere Structure meeting. Each of these meetings covered items that were pertinent to the rocket's successful launch.
